About Varicose Veins

Smiling Nurse_edited.png

Varicose veins or spider veins appear as swollen, enlarged, blue or dark purple veins, usually seen in the legs and feet. They develop when vein valves become weak or damaged, causing blood to pool in the veins or flow in the wrong direction.

These veins are most commonly seen in the lower limbs due to increased pressure from standing or sitting for long periods. In many cases, varicose veins are a cosmetic concern, but for some people they may cause pain, heaviness, itching, or discomfort and can lead to complications if left untreated.

At IMG Healthcare, we provide advanced and minimally invasive treatments for varicose veins, offering effective relief under the care of experienced vascular specialists.

What are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins, also called varicosities, are a condition in which veins become enlarged, twisted, or swollen and are visible just under the skin, most commonly in the legs and feet. They often appear blue or dark purple in color.

This condition occurs when the valves inside the veins become weak or damaged, causing blood to flow in the wrong direction and pool in the veins. The legs are most commonly affected due to prolonged standing or sitting, as well as increased pressure from obesity.

Varicose veins are quite common, and in many cases they are not serious. However, some people may experience pain, heaviness, or discomfort that may require medical treatment.

How does it form?

Varicose veins form when the valves inside the veins become weak or damaged. These valves normally help blood flow upward toward the heart.

When they stop working properly:

  • Blood starts flowing backward

  • Blood gets collected (pools) in the veins

  • Pressure increases inside the veins

  • Veins become swollen, enlarged, and twisted

This is why varicose veins are most commonly seen in the legs, where blood has to travel against gravity.

Causes of Varicose Veins

Symptoms of Varicose Veins

  • Standing or sitting for long periods

  • Aging, which weakens vein walls and valves

  • Obesity, increasing pressure on leg veins

  • Pregnancy, due to increased blood volume and pressure

  • Family history of varicose veins

  • Lack of physical activity

  • Hormonal changes (especially in women)

  • Visible, twisted, blue or dark purple veins

  • Pain or aching in the legs

  • Heaviness or tiredness in legs

  • Swelling in lower legs or ankles

  • Burning, throbbing, or itching sensation near veins

  • Muscle cramps, especially at night

  • Discomfort that worsens after standing or sitting for long hours

Diagnosis of Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are diagnosed through physical examination and imaging tests to assess vein function and blood flow.

  • Physical Examination: The doctor checks visible swollen veins, swelling, pain, and skin changes in the legs.

  • Doppler Ultrasound: A key test that uses sound waves to check blood flow and detect faulty valves or blood clots in the veins.

  • Venous Duplex Scan: Combines ultrasound imaging and Doppler to give a detailed view of vein structure and blood circulation.

  • Clinical History Review: The doctor evaluates symptoms, lifestyle, family history, and risk factors to confirm the condition.

Early diagnosis helps in choosing the right treatment and preventing complications.

How to Recover Faster After Varicose Veins Surgery

After varicose vein surgery or treatment, mild swelling and pain are common and usually improve within 2–3 weeks. Proper care helps faster recovery:

  • Recovery Tips :

  • Avoid smoking as it can delay healing

  • Do not sit or stand for long periods

  • Avoid crossing legs while sitting

  • Keep legs elevated while resting (use a pillow under the legs)

  • Wear compression stockings regularly during the first 1–2 weeks

Warning Signs (When to Contact a Doctor)

Surgeries for varicose veins usually end with your complete recovery and absence of previous pain and discomfort. However, there could be complications.

Watch out for these signs. Contact a doctor if you notice any of these:

  • Increased pain, redness, or swelling (may indicate a blood clot)

  • Bleeding from the incision site

  • Severe discomfort or worsening symptoms

Are there any home remedies for varicose veins?

If you have mild or painless varicose veins, some home care measures can help reduce discomfort and prevent worsening of the condition. However, if pain or complications are present, medical consultation is important.

Varicose veins are indicative of strain and pressure on the veins in the leg. Follow these varicose veins remedies at home, to reduce the chances of experiencing painful varicose veins:

  • Avoid standing or sitting for long periods

  • Keep your legs elevated while sitting or lying down

  • Do not cross your legs while sitting

  • Maintain a healthy weight to reduce pressure on veins

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing

  • Use compression stockings as recommended

  • Stay physically active with regular walking or light exercise

These lifestyle changes can help improve blood circulation and reduce strain on leg veins.

Varicose veins cannot always be completely prevented, but the risk can be reduced by following healthy lifestyle habits:

  • Avoid standing for long hours

  • Do not sit for long periods; keep moving regularly

  • Wear flat-heeled, comfortable footwear instead of high heels

  • Quit or avoid smoking, as it increases vein damage risk

  • Exercise regularly to improve blood circulation

  • Maintain a healthy body weight

  • Elevate your legs whenever possible to reduce pressure in veins

These measures help improve blood flow and reduce strain on leg veins.

Types of Varicose Veins Surgery

  • Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLA) :  Endovenous Laser Therapy, also known as EVLA or Endovenous Laser Treatment, is a minimally invasive, ultrasound-guided procedure. In this technique, a laser fiber is inserted into the affected vein using ultrasound guidance to heat and close the vein from inside. After a few days, the body naturally absorbs the treated vein, and blood flow is redirected to healthy veins. This procedure causes minimal discomfort, has fewer complications, and offers faster recovery with a high success rate compared to traditional surgery.

  • Vein Ligation and Stripping :Vein ligation and stripping is a surgical procedure used to remove or close damaged varicose veins and prevent complications such as ulcers or clot formation. During the procedure, small incisions are made over the affected vein, and the vein is tied (ligated) and removed (stripped). Recovery time is longer compared to minimally invasive treatments. This method is generally recommended for patients with severe varicose veins, including those with skin changes, trophic ulcers, or varicose eczema.

  • Transilluminated Powered Phlebectomy Transilluminated powered phlebectomy is an advanced vein removal technique that uses a special light device (transilluminator) to locate affected veins under the skin. Small incisions are made, and the illuminated veins are carefully removed using a suction device. This technique allows precise removal of varicose veins with minimal tissue damage and improved cosmetic results.
